“Grand Hotel Entourage”, situated in a green area at the foot of the castle hill in the heart of Gorizia, was once the domain of the Counts of Gorizia. The 16th century building of the Strassoldo family - one of the oldest and most well-known in Friuli - today hosts luxurious bedrooms and suites, a restaurant and wine bar, 4-star quality, that has blended a glorious past well with the needs of the modern traveler.
In fact, the rooms of this historical Palazzo hosted the last Royal Bourbon family from France and their ‘entourage’ in the first half of the 19th century. In 1836, Carlo X of Bourbon, King of France in exile, arrived in the city and the French court settled at Palazzo Strassoldo, as guests of Count Contarini. For about 10 years, the descendants of the king, among whom was Maria Teresa Carlotta, the Duchess of Angoulême (nicknamed ‘Madame Royale’), resided there. The salons of the aristocratic building were the setting for banquets, concerts and social events, and distinguished people accompany the history of the city, considered in that period to be the ‘Nice of Austria’.
Today all the historical rooms recall names of the revered guests, and you can relive the warm and magic atmosphere. You will be welcomed to an exclusive environment which blends the fascinating 20th century with the comfort of the 21st century: The suites and most of the bedrooms have Biedermeier -style furnishing – recalling the period of the Bourbon Royals -, upholstery and rare prints, and some boasting original antique furniture that has been lovingly renovated.
Many of the prestigious salons – a classy setting for congresses and meetings, seminars and private celebrations – still preserve the original oak flooring trod on by the royal family. Follow their footsteps…among cherry wood, rare marble and ancient doors finely decorated with pure gold. The ‘Carlo X’ Salon can host more than 100 guests and cultural events, banquets, concerts and exhibitions are held there.
The ‘Il Bearnese’ restaurant has found the perfect setting in the historic vaulted building that dates back to 1481, testimony to the first phase of construction of the Palazzo. The menus exalt traditional Friuli flavours and are accompanied by the best wines of Collio chosen from the collection of ‘Il Vinattiere di Chambord’ Wine Bar.
