An Arab fortress of the VIII century, which became the medieval castle of the Marquis of Villena, is the location of the Parador de Alarcón and stands on a bend of the river Júcar, a promontory on the border between La Mancha and Levantelocated on the outskirts of the picturesque village with its towers and fortifications, and 3 km from Madrid to Valencia, the Parador is the result of more than thirteen centuries of history.
Founded by Muslims, the fortress with battlements and a proud bastion, was the scene of many sieges and revolts. King Alphonse took possession of the fort in the XII century and it was also the home of the famous writer, Don Juan Manuel.
The hotel was meticulously restored in 2003, a fusion of classic and modern styles making it a new Parador, where the bare stone increases the original character of the building and where the use of red and orange contrasts with the sobriety and serves to put on display a genuine collection of paintings pertaining to the famous Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca. Tapies, Redondela, Sempere, AmadeoGabino, Alvaro Delgado are some of the artists represented in the old Castle, a haven of peace on the Castilian plains.
Located at the highest level of the dungeon, the alcove dedicated to Infante Don Juan Manuel (nephew of King Alfonso X el Sabio) stands out for its great vaulted ceiling. The atmosphere is truly magical. Its most peculiar feature is the private access to the viewpoint, that offers magnificent view.
At the Parador the dishes are based on the famous Cuenca and del Canale cuisine: marinated Partridge paté, varieties of birds and game, ratatouille, recipes handed down by the Arabs such as gingerbread, cheese and the infamous "Manchego" cheese. All accompanied by superb wines with a good quality/price ratio, which can also be enjoyed while visiting the vineyards.Equally interesting is the road that leads to Alarcón and with its most emblematic buildings, gole del JúcarSisante and San Clemente (30 km), the Roman town of Valeria, Belmonte and Cuenca, with its hanging houses.
