The 5-star luxury Parador de León is a Royal Palace located directly on Place de San Marcos, next to the eponymous bridge on the River Bernesca. The Monastery of San Marcos, carefully renovated, dates back to the XVI century and replaced another convent of the XII century at the times of king Alfonso VI.
Many artists are immortalized in stone and wood here, clearly showing a place rich with history – a legacy that makes the Parador, with its splendid plateresque facade a living museum-hotel.
The cloister and chapter house bring to mind the moment when Leon was the biggest Christian city in Spain.
Still, the Parador was renovated and conceived to offer 220 comfortable rooms that boast all modern comforts. They are distributed on the ancient pilgrims' residences in the original building overlooking the square and an annex building built in the early twentieth century, where most of the bigger rooms are located. A few oneiric sequences, for example in the tower, are embellished by four canopy beds, engraved doors and dressers made of fine wood.
There are sumptuous and very regal halls that may accommodate up to 700 guests, libraries and the restuarant Rey Don Sancho that serves traditional dishes with just a touch of high quality prepared by the best chefs. Here guests can taste the best dishes of the local cuisine accompanied by excellent DO Bierzo and CO Tierras de León wines.
For leisure activities in the ex-capital of the kingdom of Leon you can: go hiking, fishing, horseback riding, play tennis, visit monasteries and archaeological sites, for art buffs, visit the Cathedral, a pearl of Gothic art, the Romanesque church of Santa María del Mercado, Casa de los Botines - work of Antonio Gaudi, and finally the famous MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporanea of Castile and Leon).
