Chateau de la Barre

Hidden away in the midst of the idyllic wooden hills of the Perche between Chartres and Tours, near Vendôme, at the entrance to the Loir and Loire valleys, Château de La Barre lies protected from all noise and disturbance in its 100 acre park and gardens, and emerges as a historical haven. The Count and Countess de Vanssay, 20th generation of the family in the same location, warmly welcome you into their home, where elegance and authenticity meet with comfort and modernity.

The grand salon, decorated in 1778 for the marriage of the Marquis de Vanssay, and adorned with an ornate chandelier, ancestral portraits and magnificient antiques, transmits a quiet air of history; the salon rose, built in the 16th century, combines cozyness by the fire with beautiful furnishings. Moving both back and forward in time, the 14th century “pièce à feu” with the former well and monumental hearth now houses a bar, satellite TV and billiard.

In the great dining room, masterpiece of the 18th century with its imposing dresser, 4 course candlelit dinners accompanied by a special selection of wines, are hosted three times a week.

All the bedrooms and suites, each somptuously and individually decorated with beautiful period antiques, offer splendid views out onto the XVIth century fortifications, the vast garden, the pond and valley beyond.

During the day, simply enjoy relaxed, aristocratic living, or else visit the picturesque villages with their manor houses and XIIth century romanesque churches repleat with frescoes, vineyards, classic or romantic gardens, the spectacular old city of Le Mans, birthplace of the Plantagenet kings, or further afield, the famed Loire valley castles. Superb riding and golf in the vicinity.
