“Château Mirambeau” was reconstructed in Neo-Gothic style in the early 1800’s, over the vaulted foundations, still existing and visible, of a historic medieval fortress built in the 11th century by Arthaud de Mirambel.
This splendid structure was originally known as Mirambellum, in part in honour of its founder, but also precisely for its formidable position (latin: bellum = beautiful), perched gracefully above the banks of the Gironde overlooking the hills of Médoc from one side and the heights of Pons on the other.
