Eastnor Castle

“Eastnor Castle” overlooks and commands the entire surrounding Herefordshire landscape in its superb setting on the Malvern Hills.

The imposing and impressive structure was intended to reflect the character and stature of its founder, 1st Earl Somers, as well as the standing and fortune of the family in the early 19th century.

The Earl commissioned architect Robert Smirke, who proposed a Norman Revival style for the size and scale envisioned. Intended to project the image of a medieval fortress guarding the Welsh Borders from a distance, the emphasis on austere symmetry contrasted notably from the flowing, idyllic, castellated mansions of the late 18th century.

The spectacular grounds include a beautiful lake, forests and the renowned Arboretum, with its vast collection of conifers and other exotic trees planted in the latter half of the 19th century, at the height of Victorian passion for imported botanical specimen.

After much diligent restoration, the castle proudly offers its authentic, period guestrooms, with original artwork and furnishings - each steeped in its own history-laden eccentric past, visited as they were by nobility and distinguished guests, just as they are today.
