“Carriden House” was originally built in 1602 and by the mid 18th Century at the height of the great enthusiasm for grandiose architectural landscaping, the property underwent a levelling of the ground at its foundations, during which records indicate the discovery of a variety of Roman artefacts, though the landscape work then buried all traces of its Roman, Celtic or subsequent occupations of the estate.
The manor was later used as a soldier’s convalescent home during the war, then successively owned by various landlords, until its present day owners, the Blackbourn family, lovingly restored it to its original splendour.
Nestled in a peaceful woodland the castle is surrounded by a large garden wherein children can enjoy an outdoor play area complete with trampoline, slide and swings, while adventurous adult guests may explore the 750-year old graveyard within its grounds.
Guestrooms are delightfully decorated, warm and inviting, with all the creature comforts of home. For breakfast, Carriden House serves up wonderfully traditional Scottish fare, with wholesome, freshly picked produce, homemade jam and honey and specialties of nearby local farmers.
