Domaine de la Tortinière

The extensive grounds of the “Domaine de la Tortinière” boast traces dating back to the Roman era. The path that leads from the entrance to the marvellous park along the walls of the property towards the Indre River is part of the ancient ‘Via Romana’ that ran from Tours to Montbazon.

From the fabulous terrace of the Castle one can see the Tower of Montbazon, the original structure of which was built in the 10th century by legendary Foulques Nerra, or ‘Black Falcon’, a fiercy medieval warrior, intent on coveting the highly regarded province of ‘Touraine’.

Once a rustic country manor with two turrets, the present imposing Château was built by Pauline Dalloz, widow of a distinguished and renowned lawyer who edited the French Civil Law code still in use today.

Inspired by Renaissance masterpieces, the Castle’s architect Jacquemin Bellisle based his design on the solid construction principles of the 19th century.

At the turn of the following century it was converted into a first-class accommodations hotel and has seen the likes of French President Georges Pompidou, Audrey Hepburn, Gérard Dépardieu and many other notable figures of the last century.
