“Castello di Petroia” is a majestic medieval castle surrounded by defence walls and, from its dominating position on the top of a hill, overlooks the splendid Chiascio valley near the famous town of Gubbio.
The origins of the imposing fortress date back to the 12th century, testimony to this being a document signed by Emperor Barbarossa, while the oldest part, the big tower, dates back to about 1000. Due to its important strategic defensive position, the Castle has been the site of many historical events with the passing of the centuries and was the birthplace of Federico di Montefeltro and the Duke of Urbino.
Today, it is possible to relive the authentic atmosphere of past eras and to feel like true castle- dwellers inside its high walls, among the prestigious Sale degli Stemmi (Coat of Arms Hall), of the Princess and Astrolabe.
The bedrooms and suites are situated in two of the Castle’s buildings, Castellare Maggiore and Minore. With period furnishings, these conserve the character of the original environment and have oak-beamed ceilings, antique paintings and prints, some also with stone fireplaces, creating a luxurious environment at the same time as being welcoming and comfortable.
Around the Castle is a farm with park, woods and grasslands where you can see the famous white Chianina cattle grazing.
The ancient Tower offers a unique experience with its special suites, comprising three rooms on three levels capped by a spectacular terrace with exclusive use of the belvedere and solarium.
