Hotel Marques De La Ensenada

The Hotel Marques de la Ensenada is located in the famous city of Valladolid near the Rio Pisuerga and Puente Mayor. The building that houses the hotel carries a fascinating history behind its walls.

The Hotel Marques de la Ensenada, arises from the rehabilitation carried out on the flour mill "La Perla", originally built in 1841.
This factory, produced flour from 1842 to 2004, using the energy powered by the waters of the Canal de Castilla. This channel was one of the greatest engineering works of the time, and was built during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in order to market the grain surplus that Castile and Leon had at the time, hence reviving its economy.

In the basement of the Hotel Marques de la Ensenada, specifically in the Canal Room, through the glass floor you can see a tunnel, through which the water passed giving power to the turbines of the mill. The wheat flour storage area, is occupied today by the hotel's restaurant named after the original project designer, Antonio de Ulloa and still maintains its two original levels.

The residential area of the hotel, was the warehouse where they kept all factory production and the area where they packed the different types of flour the mill produced.
The story of the Canal de Castilla that is kept behind this hotel walls is very interesting, Antonio de Ulloa designed the preliminary project for the French engineer, Charles Lemaur, but the Marques de la Ensenada was the one who proposed, to Fernando VI, building a network of navigation channels in order to commercialize with the flour.

The Marques de Ensenada hotel offers guests all the comforts and luxuries of a 5 star hotel, plus an interesting library called "Jovellanos" with a selection of the most important works of the Enlightenment Period.
The hotel also has a bar where guests can sit and have coffee, liquor or a cocktail while they reflect on the writings of those great thinkers of the eighteenth century.

The Hotel Marques de la Ensenada, has 71,818 articles and 2,885 illustrations available to their guests, these make the L'Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des metier, original title of this great work.
