Le Château de l'Abbaye

As the crow flies, the delightful “Château de l’Abbaye” is just 15km from the Atlantic Ocean, 30 minutes from La Rochelle, the island of Île de Ré and the fine sandy beach of Vandea.
Situated on the ruins of an important Cistercian abbey founded before 1109, one of whose abbots was Richelieu, the romantic residence - covered with ivy - welcomes you with the warmth and fascination of great historical residences. The church was razed to the ground, and the castle and its annexes date back to the 17th century.

Belonging to the prestigious Château & Hotel Collection group, you will feel like friends of the family in this enchanting residence which is surrounded by 2 hectares of fenced park and has a heated swimming pool in summer, table-tennis, bowls, swings and games for children, footpath at the entrance to the property and mountain bikes available for you to explore the sunny south of Vandea or go to the sea.

Without forgetting the favourable microclimate in the Gulf of Poitou: in Roman times, the area between Luçon (10mins) and La Rochelle was covered by the sea and Moreilles was an island! The monks of Our Lady of Moreilles were the first to drain and cultivate the wetland which, today, is still called “le Marais Poitevin”. Today, only the ‘Green Venice’ recalls those times and invites you to go for pleasant boat trips on its canals.

Discover the art of living à la français, a charming atmosphere that will delight you – with the family’s furniture, rich fabrics and delicate laces, lighting, canopy beds in some rooms and loads of other extra details that transform the bedrooms and junior suites into real romantic ‘gems’, without renouncing the comforts of a boutique hotel: top-quality bed linen, double-glazed windows, flat-screen TVs and satellite channels, free high-speed wireless internet…

On request, and only for those clients of the hotel who so desire, the owners of the house, Danielle and Korakot, propose an exquisite culinary choice: an abundant breakfast (room service available too) with a wide choice of home-made jams and marmalades and fresh orange juice, typical local cuisine or real Thai cuisine, candlelit diners on the terrace or in the dining room, often in front of the crackling fireplace, with the family’s silver and a large selection of regional wines, cognacs and whiskeys.

Furthermore, they would be pleased to give you advice on the best restaurants in the area – for example, where you can enjoy a seafood dish at La Rochelle after a walk under the arches or a visit to the Aquarium.
