Parador de Hondarribia

The Parador de Hondarribia dominates the town, in one of the most elegant villas of the Basque country, in its upper part. The 10th century castle is located on the Bidasoa estuary, which is the natural border with France. About 20 km east of the capital, San Sebastián, Hondarribia is located at the North-Eastern corner of the province of Guipúzcoa, which flows into the Bay of Biscay, where you will find beautiful beaches and fishing villages.

In the old town, the hotel is located in the beautiful main square, next to the Church of NuestraSeñora del Manzano. Founded by the King of Navarre, Sancho Abarca, the Castle preserves the structure of authentic medieval fortress into a monumental and coastal environment. Its austere and defensive area, with thick walls, hides a brilliantly renovated inside area.

The vast courtyard, the magnificent views of the French coast and the sea, is what you can enjoy from the beautiful terrace and from some of the rooms.Beautiful spaces decorated with arches, floors and ceilings envelop the traveller in an atmosphere of indescribable beauty. Antique weapons and armour displayed inside the facility give it an elegant and historic air.

The suite “Queen Maria Cristina” is the biggest room and truly represents the Parador. Canopy bed with large stone vaults give the room a touch of greatness, in combination with magical views of Hondarribia and the mouth of the River Bidasoa, will make you relive the history of an ancient Palace.Famous people such as Oquendo admiral to the Duke of Alba, Marquis of Spinola, and others such as Sophia Loren, attest that the walls of this building still tells of its history.

Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast at the Parador and can also choose amongst different restaurants in the nearby areas. Strolling, you can also admire the churches and stately homes, the old bulwark, Barrio de la Marina, Sanctuary of Guadalupe and the Castillo de San Telmo.

Also worth a visit is the French Basque country Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz, Baiona. The coast of Guipuzcoa is filled with splendid beaches and fishing harbours, offering superb watersports:boat trips, fishing, canoeing, diving, windsurfing, golf, horseback riding, celebrations and festivals such as the procession of fishermen at the end of June.
